Caption from 2022 WHOI wall calendar, August:
Alvin returns from a 3,500-meter (about 11,500-feet) dive in Mona Canyon near Puerto Rico in 2021. The dive was part of the human-occupied vehicle’s post-overhaul sea trials to certify a return to service. At the same time Alvin was undergoing an extensive overhaul, its support ship, the research vessel Atlantis, completed a $50 million midlife refit to make it ready to take on an additional 20 years of scientific expeditions.
