A WHOI moored surface buoy equipped with meteorological and underwater sensors is deployed in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean from Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s R/V Roger Revelle. Fixed in strategic ocean locations, surface and subsurface moored observatories (see diagram opposite) can track oceanic processes and air-sea interactions that influence Earth’s climate.
