Image of the Day caption:
WHOI researchers and graduate students were greeted by hundreds of horses, wild and domestic, while trekking through the west coast of Iceland. The WHOI group made the field trip--the conclusion to the 2006 Geodynamics Program--to view firsthand the power of ice and its interaction with geologic features and the ocean. The horses? Well, there are roughly 80,000 of them on the island (human population: 300,000), and they are most useful for the annual sheep roundup, for companionship...and for entertaining geologists weary of looking at sheep and ice.
