Image of the Day caption:
Elephant Island and its glacier greeted the scientists and crew of the research vessel Laurence M. Gould on December 1, 2004, as they cruised toward Antarctica's Palmer Station. "It was the first glacier that I had ever seen, and it was absolutely stunning," said WHOI graduate student Regina Campbell-Malone, who was part of the research team investigating the types, numbers, and locations of plankton in the Southern Ocean. "Antarctica is one of those magnificent places that you can try to capture on film, but the photos can't hold a candle to the real thing." WHOI researchers will be spending a lot of time near both of Earth's poles over the next two years and will be participating in several live outreach events with museums and schools.
