Assured that all systems are go, Schlindwein shovels snow atop her seismometer to help insulate it from wind vibrations that might otherwise distort the motion data recorded by the instrument. The seismometers record seismic waves from the ocean floor up. Schlindwein ignores horizontal motions, which are largely caused by "ice-quakes," as ice floes creak and jostle against each other. A red flag will help the helicopter pilots find the instruments again.
