To conduct the test dive, Oden's noisy engines had to be shut down so that they wouldn't drown out Puma's ability to navigate by sound in the depths. Oden crew members were lowered by crane in a bucket onto an ice floe, where they anchored the icebreaker to the floe by drilling holes in the ice, inserting long metal poles, and attaching mooring lines from the ship.
