To navigate in the depths, Puma keeps in touch with sound beacon devices called transponders, which are dropped on the seafloor. To get the precise of locations of the transponders for navigational purposes, scientists send sound signals to them with a device called a transponder, then calculate how far away they are by the time it takes for the transponder to reply. Oden helicopter pilot Sven Stenvall lowers a transducer into a lead in the ice.
