Oden had opened a small pool of water for Puma to surface safely in. But it didn't last. Once the icebreaker turned off its water jets, the ice moved back quickly to refill and clog the pool. Puma's recovery involved timing, because Oden's thundering thrusters drowned out sound communication between the vehicle and its operators. But as soon as the water jets were turned off, the ice moved back in fast.
