WHOI physical oceanographer Peter Winsor (right) and Bengt Liljebladh hurl an instrument off Oden's aft called a Polar Profiling Float. The torpedo-shaped device is designed to descend into the depths and surface every few days, collecting measurements of water temperature, salinity, oxygen and other characteristics as it rises. If it rises in open water, it will transmit its position and its data via satellite to scientists onshore. It also designed to withstand damage if it rises and hits ice. In that case, it will bounce off and keep trying until it makes it to the surface. Winsor envisions casting several PPFs into the Arctic over the next few years to begin to start amassing data from this remote and largely uncharted region.
