Image of The Day caption:
WHOI volunteer George LeRoy packs 70-year-old biological samples for shipping to the Zoologisk Museum in Copenhagen. WHOI biologists Mary Sears and Henry Bryant Bigelow had borrowed the Pacific Ocean specimens from their Danish colleagues for study; those samples eventually found their way to a WHOI warehouse. Oceanographer emeritus George Hampson found them in 2001 and decided it was time to send them home, with help from LeRoy. Dozens of volunteers, some of them retirees, others just friends of the Institution, assist in everything from laboratory work to visitor tours.
