The ship's weight cracks the ice floes into smaller pieces. Breaking the ice is the relatively easy part. The harder part is clearing broken ice out of way, especially if the ice pack is being pushed together. Oden's officers look to sail in cracks or patches of open water, into which they can shove ice that the ship has broken.
