The robotic underwater vehicle Jaguar aborted its mission Sunday. But worse than that, it did not rise to the surface and remained hovering near the seafloor more than 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) down. Even worse than that, scientists could hear sound signals from Jaguar, but Jaguar could not hear acoustic commands from the scientists to come back home. Scientists knew where it was, but they didn't want it to be there. And they especially did not want it to stay there. Oden's helicopter took off with WHOI engineers to put transducers (devices that transmit and receive sound signals in seawater) in open areas, or leads, in the ice pack to locate Jaguar and try to send commands to it. Oden's Able Seaman Patrik Johansson stands by.
