Welcome to "Odenplan." In Swedish, "plan" means "plaza," so Odenplan is a central open area on the icebreaker Oden's first deck, where people gather. It is located just beyond Oden's mess, so people often come out from meals and sit down for a moment for a cup of coffee and chat with whoever else is there. Just as often, scientists converge to discuss the scientific operations. Here, scientists are strategizing how and where to investigate a site on the seafloor where they found evidence of hydrothermal vents. WHOI physical oceanographer Peter Winsor is drawing proposed track lines for the Camper vehicle and the CTD instrument to drift on over a site. WHOI biologist Tim Shank is at left. In between is freelance journalist Erica Lloyd, and the trusty reporter's notebook of an unidentified journalist who is actually writing notes for this caption.
