Where there are birds congregating, there inevitably will be bird poop accumulating. As a measure to save the crew's cleaning efforts, crew members sounded the ship's horn to scare off ornithological hitchhikers. It worked for a little while. Then crew members tied plastic bags around the ship's rails to whip in the wind and discourage loafing (and pooping) birds.
