The scientific research team led by senior scientist Dennis McGillicuddy and Raytheon Polar Services Corp. support staff pose on the pack ice in front of the R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer during an expedition to the Ross Sea in Antarctica in 2011-2012. The seven-week cruise to investigate sources of iron and other nutrients in the Southern Ocean was interrupted by a distress call from a South Korean fishing vessel ablaze in the middle of the night. The victims of the fire on the F/V Jung Woo 2 were taken aboard the the Nathaniel B. Palmer and transported to McMurdo Station for medical attention and subsequent evacuation from Antarctica.
