Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering.
Born in New Delhi, India, thousands of miles from the ocean, Yogesh (Yogi) Alok Girdhar grew up watching Jacques Cousteau documentaries, reading Tintin comics, and dreaming of exploring the world. In his teenage years, he got hit by the Internet and programming bug, which kept him in a trance for many years. After earning B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and two years of slaving for software companies, he broke out of his trance and refocused on his childhood dream of exploring the world. He pursued a Ph.D. researching autonomous exploration robots at McGill University and then joined WHOI as a postdoctoral scholar to participate in ocean expeditions and play with underwater robots. In January 2016, he joined WHOI's scientific staff as an assistant scientist and plans to continue working on building autonomous exploration robots that have an understanding of their environmentand are curious.
