Looking a bit like a floating junkyard, Alvin's original tender, Lulu (named for Allyn Vine's mother), was constructed by Woods Hole contractor Dan Clark from a pair of Navy surplus minesweeping pontoons. The craft proved capable of handling thirteen tons of submersible for an unmanned 7,700-foot (2,333-meter) safety dive in the Bahamas, followed by a series of manned 6,000-foot (1,818-meter) test dives. With many modifications over the years, this one-of-a-kind research vessel took on a more orderly, if always unusual, appearance.
