A WHOI-led 1986 expedition returned to explore the wreck with the submersible Alvin and a prototype remotely operated vehicle Jason Jr. In 2012, the 100th anniversary of Titanic's sinking, WHOI researchers returned again with advanced technology to collect enhanced images and create a comprehensive map of the wreck site.
