When the global pandemic limited access to ship time, WHOI scientist and engineer Dana Yoerger and his team took an innovative approach to fieldwork. They used shore-based operations in Bermuda to rapidly test new twilight zone technologies—chief among them the new Mesobot vehicle Yoerger and his team invented. Mesobot can help answer many important questions about the midwater ocean by photographing and following animals, making precise environmental measurements, and sampling environmental DNA.
