Underneath the Greenland ice sheet shows the entrance to a large subglacial tunnel. WHOI glaciologist Sarah Das took this photo while studying the pathways glacial meltwater takes from the surface of the ice sheet to its return to the sea. Here meltwater stored in Lake Tinninilik drains under Saqqarliup Sermia Glacier out into Saqqarleq Fjord in west Greenland. Along its route, meltwater interacts with the surrounding environment and is chemically transformed by the time it reaches the coast. Many of these processes are being sped up under climate change as summer melting increases.
