Caption from 2024 WHOI Wall Calendar, September:
A science team arrives by helicopter to search for helium-rich hot springs on the island of Immikkeertikajik Uunertertalik, northern east Greenland. Helium gas is critical to many modern technologies, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), nuclear energy, and material analysis. But known reserves of helium are rapidly being depleted. WHOI geochemist Peter Barry took this photo while researching how these unique gases are released, transported, and stored with the objective of finding new sources of helium. In this photo, the mountains and glaciers of Liverpool Land flow into the Atlantic Ocean.
