Caption from 2024 WHOI Wall Calendar, July:
A blue shark (Prionace glauca) swimming off Faial Island, Azores, Portugal. MIT-WHOI Joint Program student Ciara Willis took this photo while participating in fieldwork with scientists at the University of the Azores to collect length measurements on sharks. The camera on the right is fitted with a laser system that allows scientists to estimate the overall length of each shark. The one pictured was about 8 feet (2.4 meters) long. This was Willis’ first time swimming with large pelagic sharks and the deepest water she’s ever swum in, about 3,200 feet (one kilometer deep).
