Caption from 2024 WHOI Wall Calendar, August:
Sunrise over Nunap Isua Archipelago, Greenland. MIT-WHOI joint program student Hiroki Nagao took this photo on an expedition on R/V Neil Armstrong to service moorings that monitor the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a system of ocean currents that carry warm water north and cold water south. These currents move heat to northern Europe, support marine life, and pump oxygen and carbon dioxide into the deep ocean. Greenland ice sheet melting threatens to weaken these currents. Programs like Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic are helping scientists understand changes in that region.
