Laura Stevens, a graduate of the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, overlooks a canyon carved by a glacial river system in Greenland. WHOI glaciologist Sarah Das took this photo during the Arctic summer, when most river systems are full of meltwater. The surface of the Greenland ice sheet is far from flat and white, and the emptiness of this riverbed reflects the history and dynamic nature of this environment. As the ice in this region slides slowly towards the coast each year, canyons carved into a low valley by rushing meltwater can move far uphill and away from their water source.
