Image Of the Day caption:
WHOI Summer Student Fellow Sophie Ruehr (Yale University, left) and Partnership in Education Program student Adrynne Jones (Eastern Michigan University, right) prepare to extract a sample of sediment from a gravity corer with the help of instructor Phil Alatalo (right). The sampling exercise was part of a day-long field trip that summer students take every year aboard the WHOI coastal research vessel Tioga. On the cruise, students learn basic skills in oceanography, such as how to take samples, make measurements using scientific instruments, and record data.
