Berlinda Batista of Bridgewater State University, Ellin Rittler of University of San Francisco, and Kelly Luis of Columbia University (left to right) learn how to perform a beach survey in the Partnership Education Program (PEP). PEP offers research internships to underrepresented groups in the fields of ocean and environmental sciences, and each summer, 16 students come to Woods Hole for a four-week course taught by scientists from local institutions: WHOI, NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center, U.S. Geological Survey, Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole Research Center, and Sea Education Association. In addition to coursework, students complete a research project with Woods Hole scientists.
