Caption from 2023 WHOI Wall Calendar, March:
Imperial cormorants, or Imperial shags (Leucocarbo atriceps), sometimes breed in small colonies, but colonies often consist of hundreds of breeding pairs such as this one in Argentina. Colonies can also be shared with other seabirds, such as the dolphin gulls (Leucophaeus scoresbii) visible in the foreground. This photo was taken by Lance Wills, an able-bodied seaman on R/V Atlantis, while the ship was in the region searching for the missing Argentine submarine ARA San Juan.
