Image of The Day caption:
The fantail of the research vessel Oceanus is crowded with gear as scientists and technicians prepare to cruise from Woods Hole to the Gulf Stream and back in November 2005. The cruise was the first of six made for the CLIVAR Mode Water Dynamics Experiment (CLIMODE), which studies the exchange of heat and moisture between the North Atlantic and the atmosphere, the circulation of the ocean, and the formation of parcels of colder water that sink into the middle depths. The final cruise of the experiment will depart in November 2007.
