Image of The Day caption:
Amy Kukulya releases a REMUS 100 autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) into the water over the shelfbreak north of Cape Hatteras. The WHOI engineer was part of a cruise in August led by physical oceanographer Glen Gawarkiewicz and funded by the Office of Naval Research to identify and track schools of fish and measure their size and distribution across the continental shelf. The team used the sidescan sonar on the REMUS to image schools and found that the highest number of schools occurred in the vicinity of the shelfbreak.
