Image Of the Day caption:
In February 1996, WHOI launched its newest vessel, Atlantis, in Moss Point, Mississippi. Atlantis arrived in Woods Hole in April 1997 and three months later deployed for science operations. Measuring 274 feet in length, Atlantis accommodates a crew of 22 and a scientific party of 37 for as long as 60 days at sea. Atlantis supports general oceanographic work as well as the deep-sea submersible Alvin, which recently completed a comprehensive overhaul and upgrade in time to celebrate its 50th year of ocean exploration. The ship and sub returned to service for science in the spring with research in the Gulf of Mexico.
Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 40, No. 1, Pg. 17:
AGOR-25 was launched in February 1996 and delivered to WHOI in 1997. It continues the Atlantis tradition begun when the Institution was founded in 1930.
