Image of The Day caption:
This Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) surface mooring was recently deployed in the future vicinity of the Pioneer Array. Its design represents the type of instruments that will eventually be used in the coastal arrays (Pioneer and Endurance) and is similar to the ones that will be deployed at the global sites. The mooring serves as a test bed for some of the scientific instruments that are proposed as part of the full mooring. It will also help test wind and solar power generation systems as well as a stretch hose and other technology that will bring power and data connectivity to the sea floor.
