Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 51, No. 2, pg. 45:
Scientists dug a channel on a shoreline to induce the formation of rip currents. Waves break on the shallower sides of the channel--not in it--causing water to pile up unevenly on the beach. The water follows the path of least resistance, rushing toward the low-lying channel, through the narrow escape conduit, and back out to sea.
