Image Of the Day caption:
The science crew aboard US Coast Guard cutter Healy prepare a CTD sampler for deployment during the 2014 Arctic Spring expedition to the Chuchki Sea. In search of an under-ice algae, scientists used the CTD to sample the temperature, salinity, and water velocity at various depths information that indicates nutrient and plankton levels in the water. Co-principal investigator Bob Pickart, a WHOI physical oceanographer, used the CTD data to paint a picture of shifting ocean dynamics on a micro- and macro-scale.
