Image Of the Day caption:
WHOI post-doctoral investigator Tom Chalk manipulates a dataset showing carbonate ion concentration in the 3-dimensional image visualization laboratory. The lab is used to help analyze large, geo-referenced datasets of physical and chemical properties in the global ocean. It was established with a grant by the National Science Foundation to bring together a team of computer scientists, physical oceanographers, paleoceanographers, and geophysicists from WHOI, UC Davis, and UC Santa Barbara to reconstruct the past ocean circulation from sparse geochemical data collected from fossils in deep sea sedimentary cores.
