climate. This illustration, inspired by the maps of cartographer Harold Fisk and data from WHOI oceanographers, shows us how major currents like the Gulf Stream are shifting throughout the years.

Ocean currents are wiggly, but just how wiggly may vary from one year to the next. This map shows monthly variations in the path of the Gulf Stream over the course of 1995 (shown here within the white dashed lines) and 2014 (the overlaid orange tracks). In recent decades, the Gulf Stream has begun to meander more erratically. As it does, warm water eddies (yellow rings shown north of the Gulf Stream above) may break off and spiral toward Georges Bank and the U.S. Northeast, where they can impact cold water species and disrupt local fisheries.
