Image Of the Day caption:
Japanese biologist, Hiroomi Miyamoto, checks on an aerosol sampler during the 2011 R/V Ka'imikai-O-Kanaloa cruise off the northeast coast of Japan near Fukushima. The sampler, which was fastened to the top of the ship, collected small air particles onto filter paper. Miyamoto was part of a 17-member team, from eight institutions, that spent 15 days at sea. The goal of the sampling effort was to provide an analysis of contaimination levels from Fukushima in the air over the ocean from 20 to 350 miles offshore.
