Image of The Day caption:
WHOI engineer John Kemp (in coveralls) and bosun Blaine Blinkhorn (in red) recover a McLane Moored Profiler (MMP) from the Beaufort Sea during a research cruise on the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker Louis S. St. Laurent. The 2004 cruise was part of the long-term Beaufort Gyre Exploration Project––which is still in progress––to study a massive reservoir of fresh water in the sea. The MMP had spent the previous year gathering data on currents, salinity, and temperature. After downloading its data and replacing the batteries, the research team redeployed the MMP for another year of work.
