Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 45, No. 1, Pg. 13:
The Nootka buoy observatory is like a wireless computer network, with a surface buoy serving as the communications hub between seafloor instruments, satellites, and shore-based researchers. Acoustic modems send sound waves through the water to relay data and commands to and from the buoy as it drifts over the various instruments.
