Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 47, No. 3, Pg. 4:
1) Starting in 2003, oceanographers released 76 floats off Newfoundland at depths of either 700 or 1,500 meters in the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC), considered the main conduit for southward-flowing water from the northern North Atlantic.
2) They tracked the floats over two years using moored sound sources. Blue lines indicate the tracks for the first 40 floats; red dots indicate their last
reported location. Surprisingly, few floats were swept down the DWBC; instead, a number meandered southward through the interior region of the ocean.
