Image Of the Day caption:
A Slocum glider is lowered into the western Mediterranean Sea from the Mallorcan research catamaran SOCIB, as part of a recent expedition to study how currents there affect salinity, temperature, oxygen, and other water properties along the Almeria-Oran front. WHOI uses ocean gliders to collect similar data all over the world, at locations ranging from New Englands continental shelf to the Irminger Sea off Greenland. This particular glider was deployed by Spanish researchers as part of a collaboration between the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), the Balearic Islands Coastal Ocean Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB), and a team from WHOI led by physical oceanographers Amala Mahadevan and J. Thomas Farrar.
