WHOI Engineering Assistant Sean Whelan (second from the right), shows scientists from India and Sri Lanka how to deploy a Slocum Glider while on a cruise in the Bay of Bengal last November. Scientists deployed the glider from the R/V Roger Revelle to measure temperature, salinity, and turbulence at different depths. The measurements were part of a project to understand how these processes influence ocean-atmosphere phenomena such monsoon formation in the Indian Ocean. The glider was retrieved after a week so the ship could return to Colombo, Sri Lanka, to avoid a cyclone that had developed in the Bay of Bengal.
