Image Of the Day caption:
Engineering assistant Molly Curran prepares attaches a thruster of the Nereid Under Ice (NUI) hybrid remotely operated vehicle before dock tests at WHOI and a dive off the coast of Provincetown. Engineers conducted shallow-water trials demonstrating the vehicle's capability to operate miles from its support ship while remaining under real-time human control. The sea trials focused on NUI's fiber optic tether, which is unarmored and is at greater risk in shallow water of dragging on the seafloor, and to allow the engineers to prepare the vehicle for future research in shallow regions of polar seas.
