A lone buoy sits atop Arctic ice in the Canadian Basin. In the water below the buoy, a sound beacon in the cold-water "sound duct" sends out sound wave signals to communicate with other buoys and autonomous underwater vehicles hundreds of miles away, part of a new long-range under-ice acoustic communication system.
