After several days enveloped in 24-hour fog and gray skies in July 2007, all of a sudden, things changed for the research team on the WHOI-led expedition to the Arctic Ocean. "You?ve heard the expression, 'the fog lifted'?" quipped science writer Lonny Lippsett. "Well, it wasn't like that. It sort of just disappeared, and the sky suddenly reappeared, along with the sun. And the color blue."
