Image Of the Day caption:
Sound generators sit on R/V Knorr's deck, heading to the subpolar Atlantic in summer 2014. A group of scientists involved in the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program, including WHOI physical oceanographer Amy Bower, placed the generators on moorings across the subpolar region, and released 40 small floats to drift in the deepest currents, where they recorded timed "pongs" from the generators. In two years when the floats resurface and transmit data, Bower will reconstruct their movement, revealing deep-water pathways in the region and improving our understanding of climate's effect on North Atlantic circulation.
