Data collection in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas onboard USCGC Polar Star.
Image of The Day caption:
The summer sun never sets in the Arctic, but it did provide inspiring views for scientists working around-the-clock in the summer of 2002, during a month-long expedition in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. WHOI physical oceanographer Bob Pickart lead colleagues as they traveled aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star to gather data from moorings about water flow in the western Arctic. The three-year project helped scientists better understand how huge amounts of water move through the region and address issues relating to polar ice melt and temperature changes that could influence food production for marine life. All of these questions and more are part of the vast and intricate global water cycle, the subject of the most recent Morss Colloquium today, May 18, at 7:00 p.m. in Redfield auditorium.
