Image of The Day caption:
A crane lowers equipment for a meteorological station from the deck of the US Coast Guard icebreaker Healy to the ice in the Beaufort Sea, where WHOI technicians John Kemp and Frank Bahr were waiting to assemble it. The station will record weather conditions during the coming autumn. The Healy cruise is led by WHOI physical oceanographer Bob Pickart who, with an interdisciplinary team of researchers, is studying the effects of climate change on the Arctic. Their work is chronicled on the website Vanishing Arctic and includes perspectives from an Inupiaq community observer.
