Image Of the Day caption:
A spectator watched as R/V Knorr gots a lift from a massive crane while in dry dock in Amelie, Louisiana, in 1989. The then-20-year-old research ship was at McDermott Shipyard for a major refit to extend ship's range, add more bunks for scientists and install a new propulsion system. Upon leaving the shipyard in 1991, the 279-foot Knorr would go on to make trips as far north as the Arctic Circle and as far south as the Southern Ocean. Knorr underwent another refit in 2006 to add a long core system that can extract 150-foot-long samples from the seafloor. Today, Knorr has traveled more than one million miles.
