It would be difficult to mistake Woods Hole, Mass., for any other seaside town in New England. Instead of t-shirt shops and ice cream stores (though those exist here), buildings owned by several scientific institutions line the streets. Water Street, which runs left to right in this photo, boasts laboratories and other facilities of the National Marine Fisheries Service, Marine Biological Laboratory, and WHOI. On August 6, those and several other institutions will host the Woods Hole Science Stroll for visitors to learn more about the globe-spanning research that originates in Woods Hole and the ocean that surrounds Cape Cod.

Boats fill Eel Pond in the village of Woods Hole, which is home to a variety of research institutions, including (left to right) National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, National Marine Fisheries Service, Marine Biological Laboratory, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. It's not just for scientists; visitors to the village can learn a lot about marine science, too.
