WHOI scientist emeritus Sandy Williams (at left) and physical oceanographer Jim Churchill (at right) explain the impending deployment of a bottom tripod equipped with two instruments ? a Modular Acoustic Velocity Sensor (MAVS) and an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) ? to reporters participating in WHOI's annual Ocean Science Journalism program. The instruments, which measure waves and current patterns, were deployed in Buzzards Bay on Sept. 10, 2008, during a short cruise aboard the research vessel Tioga. Scientists retrieved the data on Oct. 21, 2008, and will compare it to models of wave and current generation from meteorological measurements.
